A few years ago I harvested the HD out of a dying Dell laptop and stuck that into a 2.5″ USB enclosure that I had picked up cheap on ebay. I formatted it ntfs (not sure if this matters), made it bootable and dragged the install files onto it using a laptop. Btw.
